What is the difference between a ‘Domestic’ Ladder and an ‘Industrial’ Ladder?
- An ‘Industrial’ ladder must have a minimum load rating of 120kg and be labeled that it is suitable for Industrial use.
- A ‘Domestic’ ladder must have a minimum load rating of 100kg and be labeled that it is suitable for Domestic use.
A ‘Domestic’ ladder is NOT suitable for use in a workplace or in a commercial environment. Only ‘Industrial’ ladders with a load rating of 120kg or higher can be used in a work environment - this includes building sites, factories, shops and offices.
Ladder Standards:
- BS 2037 – Industrial / Heavy Duty
Heavy-duty, high-frequency use and onerous conditions of use, carriage, and storage. The maximum weight of user and tools i.e. the duty rating is 130kg, that’s around 20st 6lbs.
- BS/EN 131 – Heavy Duty/ Light Trade / DIY
BS EN 131 product standard covering all types of portable ladders (step, extending and combination) has been substantially revised. High & Low-frequency use and less onerous conditions of use, carriage, and storage. The maximum duty rating is 150kg.
- BS 2037 Class 3 – Domestic / DIY
Occasional, light use only with a maximum duty rating of 95kg which is just 14st 13lbs.
- EN 14183 – Domestic / Light Commercial - Step Stools
Light use only with a maximum duty rating of 150kg which is just 23st 6lbs.
- EN 14975 - Heavy Duty Loft Ladders
Occasional, light use only with a maximum duty rating of 150kg which is just 23st 6lbs.
